Why would someone with low vision use siri?

Navigating an a computer or smart phone can be challenging for individuals with low vision due to its small screen size and intricate and highly visual interface.

This struggle may hinder efficient access to desired apps and features.

However, Siri, Apple’s “Voice Assistant”, comes can provide navigation assistance. With Siri's voice-command capabilities, users with low-vision can more easily interact with their iPhones, iPad, and desktop Mac.

Siri becomes a valuable aid by providing A less visual form of navigation, allowing users to access various functions without relying on manual interaction.

Whether it's sending text messages, setting reminders, or reading emails aloud, Siri's voice-guided support ensures that users with low vision can stay connected and organized with ease.




Siri on your iPhone:

Getting Siri's Attention:

Siri is very easy to use but first you need to let her know you are speaking to her.

To activate Siri, simply press and hold the Home button or say, "Hey Siri" if your device supports this hands-free feature. A subtle vibration or chime will confirm Siri is ready to assist you

Making Phone Calls:

When making a phone call, Say, "Hey Siri, call [contact name]". You can also say “Hey Siri, call [123-456-7890]” and list out the desired phone number digit by digit. To use a person’s name that person must be saved as a contact on your iPhone.

Siri will then say “calling [123-456-7890}”, the phone app will open on our phone and the call is made.

Ending A Phone Call:

To end an active phone call with a quick gesture you can double tap the screen with two fingers. With gestures it is important to use the correct number of fingers and tap quickly.

Sending Text Messages on Either iPhone or iPad:

Using Siri to text is fairly simple. All we have to do is say, "Hey Siri, send a text message to [contact name], or dictate out a phone number [123-456-7890]".

After a moment Siri will respond saying “okay, what do you want to say?” and then you can dictate/speak our mesage.

When you are finished with your message just stop speaking and wait for siri to read your message back to you to check for any errors and she then will ask “do you want me to send it?

Pro Tip: Sometimes it can be a good idea to plan a message to send ahead of time. I find myself getting flustered once I know Siri is recording and I can forget to mention important information.

Setting Reminders:

You can ask Siri to set reminders by saying, "Hey Siri, remind me to [task] at [time or location]." Siri will create the reminder and notify you when the time comes or when you arrive at the designated location.

Using Siri to Load an App or Switch Apps:

Siri can help you navigate your iPad more efficiently. Try saying, "Hey Siri, open [app name]," or "Hey Siri, switch to [app name]." This way, you can quickly access the apps you need without navigating through the home screen.

Reading Emails and Messages:

Have Siri read your emails or messages aloud by saying, "Hey Siri, read my emails," or "Hey Siri, read my text messages." Siri will summarize the content, and you can respond using your voice, keeping your hands free.

Calendar Management:

Stay on top of your schedule with Siri's calendar management capabilities. Ask, "Hey Siri, what's my schedule for [date]?" or "Hey Siri, add an event for [date and time]." Siri will help you stay organized and informed.

Launching Applications:

Siri on your Mac can help you open applications swiftly. Simply say, "Hey Siri, open [app name]," and Siri will do the rest. Say goodbye to sifting through desktop clutter!

Setting Alarms:

Stay punctual with Siri's alarm-setting feature. Tell Siri, "Hey Siri, set an alarm for [time]," and you'll receive an auditory cue when the time comes, ensuring you never miss an important appointment.

Siri can assist you in adjusting system preferences on your Mac. Say, "Hey Siri, increase brightness," or "Hey Siri, turn on VoiceOver." Siri's got your back when it comes to personalized settings.

Searching The Web:

Siri can assist you in searching for things on the web. Simply say, “Hey Siri, search for [Search criteria] on the internet.
